Types of Bottle Trees of Socotra
The signature features of Socotra bottle trees remain the same: the wide truck, widespread roots, and ability to store water. However, botanists have thus far divided these trees into three different types.
1. Cucumber Tree (Dendrosicyos Socotranus)
When talking about the unique trees of Socotra, the cucumber tree stands out. It is not only one of the highlights of all the must-see Socotran plants but also one among the bottle tree categories. Here's what you should know about cucumber bottle trees before you embark on a Socotran adventure:
· This tree is the only cucumber tree. All types of cucumber grow as smaller plants, except for the cucumbers that come from Socotran bottle trees Dendrosicyos Socotranus.
· Cucumber bottle trees are not only interesting as a one of kind member of the cucumber family. These are also one of the largest trees on the island—often growing over 6 meters high.
You will come across cucumber in the lowland, arid regions of Socotra. The thick trunk lets the bottle tree retain moisture—and thus grow a vegetable with fairly high water content.
The next time you're having a meal in Socotra with cucumbers, you know that the variety you're munching on is unique! Cucumber trees also provide food to many birds and animals in Socotra. Thus, along with their ability to thrive in a dry atmosphere, these trees are a useful part of the ecosystem on Socotra Island.
2. Desert Rose Tree (adenium obesum subsp. sokotranum)
Cucumber trees are charming, but you will me in more awe of the Desert Rose (bottle) trees on the island. This bottle tree comes close to the height of the cucumber bottle trees, though usually smaller—about 5 meters high. Desert rose tree also grow in some parts of Yemen mainland, but the island counterparts are taller.
The 'obesum' (obese) in the name comes from—you guessed it—the bottle-shaped trunk. Only this time, the strange body of the trees ends in gorgeous flowers on top, making the scenery around these exquisite!
If you want to see Desert Rose trees in Socotra, you don’t have to look far—they’re everywhere. However, to see the most striking of their kind, consider Diksam Plateau on Socotra Island a must-visit. A springtime trip to Socotra means you will see lots of these trees blooming beautifully.

3. Socotran Fig Tree (dorstenia gigas)
The Socotra Fig Tree, a member of the Moraceae family, bears the signature bottle tree features: the unique and swollen trunk and unexpected landscape surrounding it. However, the truck of the Socotran fig trees is also twisted, and it is more common in rocky regions on the island. Needless to say, this tree is quite photogenic, even if you may feel like it was transported from another planet!
The rocky terrain that the endemic fig tree flourishes in actually plays a role in its growth. The hard ground keep the seedlings safe from grazing sheep goats, sheep, and camels. The rocky terrains also contributes to the extraordinary twisted shape of the tree.
