Island Adventures in Water: The Best Diving Spots in Socotra

The variety of marine species and the sights of coral reefs that await you underwater on Socotra Island are truly unique experiences! There are many exciting snorkeling and diving spots for you to explore. Read on!

1. Dihamri Marine Reserve (Protected Area)

One of the most well-known diving spots in Socotra is Dihamri, a marine reserve and a protected area on the island. Moreover, it is home to the deepest diving site on the island (nearly 50 meters below surface level).

The landscape of the Dihamri beach resembles the typical Socotrian terrain. There are white sands with orange flecks, blood-red rocks, and blue waters that remind you of a painting. Furthermore, the unique part about Dihamri is that there is broken coral scattered all across the beach.

It’s a popular diving location and one of the most beautiful places to add to your Socotra Island trip due to the magnificent coral reef close to the shore. If you are a certified diver, you can explore further and possibly come across manta rays, barracudas, and black-tip sharks. Best of all, the beach has cozy cottages and houses, where locals can rent you snorkeling and diving gear.

2. Adho Reserve

Accessible by walking or a rugged jeep trail from the village of Adourno, Adho Demelah is a quaint Bedouin settlement. While it serves as a charming rustic campsite, bring all your camping gear, as the area is undeveloped. Additionally, a short way from Adho Demalah leads you to Erkabo and Fera, which are ideal for day hikes.

As for the Adho Reserve area, you’ll find two diving spots in Socotra here, with depths of up to 30 meters. Look forward to encountering amazing marine life and breathtaking views in your underwater escapades at Adho!

3. Ras Erissel Beach

Head to the quiet northeastern side of Socotra and you'll enter a quaint fishing village—also a protected area. Ras Erissel Beach is one of the secluded spots on the island, perfect for group or solo traveling in Socotra. It’s a very memorable destination if want a peaceful shoreline camping along with some snorkeling and diving.

At Ras Errisel, there are seven diving spots in Socotra, with a variety of shipwrecks. Some of these date back as far as 50 years! And luckily, these have been preserved, so you can dive down and explore them.

4. Qalansiyah Beach

The picturesque village of Qalansiyah in Socotra Island is one of the most wonderful places in the world. Why?

· Qalansiyah beach has the signature velvety white sands and azure waters of Socotra. Stroll along the beautiful shore, camp and wait for the sunset view, and take a refreshing dip.

· Moreover, the famous Detwah Lagoon is next to the village of Qalansiyah Beach. Climb the small hill in the village for panoramic views of the lagoon, or visit by hiring a fishing boat.

· Finally, Qalansiyah offers snorkeling and shallow underwater swims. The water is super clear, which means that you may get to witness turtles, eagle rays, manta rays—and dolphins too!

Needless to say, a complete day and night of camping at Qalansiyah beach is not to be missed!

5. Shoab Bay

Rent a fishing boat in Qalansiyah and set off to Shoab Bay. The diving spot features Socotra’s biggest shipwreck, and stunning marine life. Moreover, the journey to Shoab Beach is an adventure on its own. You'll see awe-inspiring rock formations, created by nature over time.

The water at Shoab Beach is crystal clear and pristine. Therefore, you’ll be able to appreciate the beauty of the underwater realm even before you take the plunge. Additionally, this clarity makes Shoab a fantastic spot for snorkeling with plenty of fun even if diving isn't your thing.

If planning to add this place to your diving spots in Socotra, then don’t miss the Sunrise shipwreck resting 27 meters below the water's surface. This impressive steel wreckage is the largest around Socotra and has formed an artificial reef that draws various marine species.

Note: Shoab Bay experiences strong currents and low visibility during inclement weather. Exercise caution and visit with an experienced diver!

6. Detwah Lagoon

Another area you can access via Qalansiyah for some water adventures is Detwah Lagoon, quite possibly the most breathtaking beach in Socotra!

The best time to travel to Socotra for a calm swim at Detwah is between October and May. Additionally, since this unique spot doesn't attract many visitors, it’s more charming! Look forward to enjoying some great moments with your group. However, know that there are no shaded areas or facilities around, so pack plenty of supplies, including water and sunscreen.

The gorgeous Detwah Lagoon is a perfect spot for swimming, but the water is not deep enough for a proper dive. You can however snorkel for gorgeous underwater views unlike any of those in other places on Socotra Island—so don’t miss out!

7. Rosh Marine Protected Area

Rosh is a marine reserve with a coral reef situated about a kilometer off the coast. This protected area includes a large diving site where depths vary from 10 to 20 meters. If you’re in the mood for some thrill, then go for a night dive for fascinating underwater views after sunset.

When you opt for a daytime diving session, and a boat will transport you to the dive site, where an expert will show you the safe diving area. The diving experience is wonderful due to the colorful coral reefs and a variety of fish species. Once you get back, you can spend the rest of the day with scenic walks along the beach or visit the nearby village.
