Mystique of Socotra's Dragon Blood Trees Dracaena Cinnabari

For the mystical charm for which Socotra Island is gaining popularity amongst avid travelers and nature lovers, much credit can be given to Dragon Blood Trees. These trees have truly stood the test of time, dating back hundreds of years. When planning Socotra adventure tours, trips to where these trees are found in abundance are ideal for the itinerary. There’s much about these trees that meets the eye!

The Secrets of the Enigmatic Dragon Blood Trees

Dracaena Cinnabari, or the Dragon’s Blood Trees, are endemic to Socotra. These are distinguishable due to their umbrella-like canopy, gnarly and stout trunks and branches. While a Dragon’ Blood Tree will be an eerie sight when you first see it, it somehow fits within the secluded, arid landscape of the island.

The whole island has a unique feel, whether you are exploring the hidden caves of Socotra or strolling along velvety white sand beaches. The Dragon Blood Trees give off the same mystical aura, and will have a lasting effect on even the most seasoned tourists!

These trees are known as Dam al-Akhawain in Arabic, meaning “the blood of the two brothers.” The urban folk tales go something like this: two brothers, Darsa and Samha, battled to death. And, the site where blood was shed was where the first Dragon's Blood Tree sprouted. Another tale suggests that these trees grew from the blood of a dragon during its fierce fight with an elephant!

What Makes Dragon Blood Trees So Captivating?

Fascinating visual appeal and attached tales aside, there’s more to Dragon’s Blood Trees that establish their distinction. The main features of these trees make them a vital part of Socotra’s ecosystem. These have been a source of interest for dendrologists, and exploring the variations of these trees is one of the eco-friendly activities to experience on Socotra Island. Once you’re past a Dragon Blood Tree’s bizarre appearance, there are some amazing features to uncover.

- The ‘Dragon’s Blood’ in the name comes from the tree’s deep-red sap.

The distinctive red sap is what gives Dragon’s Blood Trees their imposing name—and makes them all the more alien-like!

That said, this red sap has benefits beyond adding to the unique look of the trees. The sap produces a resin that was popular in ancient times. Various civilizations, including ancient Romans, valued the resin from the sap for a variety of uses. The most common uses were traditional medicine, dyes, and cosmetics. Even in current times, locals create varnish out of the resin.

- The umbrella-like shape of Dragon’s Blood Trees is crucial for survival.

The shape of Dragon Blood Trees gives way to an amazing silhouette for remarkable photographs. More importantly, this shape helps with the tree's survival. Socotra Island faces harsh weather for most of the year, the temperature reaching scorching heights during the summer months. With minimal rainfall, the heat takes a toll on trees—but Dragon’s Blood Trees withstand the climate:

· Many trees typically absorb water from the soil and transport it to the leaves. Dragon’s Blood Trees can also draw moisture from the air and direct it into the ground.

· The structure of the tree enables it to seamlessly move water from its leaves down through the branches and trunk to the roots—a process known as horizontal precipitation.

Additionally, the tree's thick canopy provides ample shade, allowing rainwater to penetrate the soil before it can evaporate.

- The ecological role Dragon’s Blood Trees play is significant.

Experts categorize the Dragon’s Bood Trees as an ‘umbrella’ species. And no, this is not in reference to its shape but rather the role these trees play in helping Socotra's ecosystem thrive.

The single Dragon’s Blood Tree can be a source of support to dozens of other plants and animal species, from geckos to flowering plants. Researchers studied the plants found growing on the forest floor by these trees and compared these to open areas. Out of 92 plant species they identified, 32 species, including seven species native to the island, grow exclusively near Dragon’s Blood Trees.

- Socotra’s Dragon Blood Trees are endangered.

The Dragon Blood Trees on Socotra Island are found stretching from the rocky landscapes of Diksam Plateau to the Firhmin Forest. This forest also happens to have the highest concentrations of these unique trees.

However, for every dozen thriving trees, there are numerous fallen ones, their white trunks split in the center and white branches jutting out from the earth. Most dragon’s blood trees are probably hundreds of years old, but it's hard for experts to identify their exact age because they don’t have rings in their trunks. Without younger trees to replace them, this current group might be the last.

Preservation Efforts for Socotra’s Dragon Blood Trees

There are two factors that are causing Dragon's Blood Trees to be in danger of extinction. One of these is the climate crisis. Socotra Island’s arid climate has always been harsh. However, the past few years have been especially intense, with fewer rainy seasons and more droughts. As a result, the moisture in the soil is quite low, making it difficult for young trees to thrive.

Secondly, overgrazing is a major issue in the decline of Dragon’s Blood Trees. Experts believe that there are about four goats for every person on the island. Consequently, the goats consume everything in sight, including the young saplings of these endemic trees.

So, what can be done? Community involvement and sustainable tourism practices on Socotra Island play a crucial role in safeguarding the Dragon Blood Trees and their ecosystem. By participating in eco-friendly initiatives, locals can earn a living while also helping to protect these trees. Tourists need to practice caution when exploring and photographing, avoiding anything that may upset the ecological balance.
